Deadly Poison

Think of the most evil thing on this planet. Think of how awful and disgusting it is. What are you thinking about? ISIS? Planned Parenthood? That jerk that cut you off in traffic the other day?

Whatever it is, I’m sure it is very evil and evokes emotion of disgust and anger. I remember sitting on my couch in China discovering of the Sandy Hook shooting where 20 elementary children and 6 teachers were murdered for no good reason. I remember filling up with rage and anger while being disgusted and sick at the same time.

But has it ever crossed your mind that your tongue might be more evil that these things?

James tells us in Chapter 3 that your tongue is “a world of unrighteousness”, “a restless evil, full of deadly poison”, and it is “setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell”.

People who murder humans are evil and disgusting. Our tongue may not kill the body, but it can certainly jab the soul. If you are married or know someone very well, you know there are certain things you can say to a person that will destroy them. You know their heart and you know what you can say to tear it apart.

We need to watch what we say, but we also need to watch what we pour into our lives. Remember what Jesus said in Luke 6:45?

James goes on to say “With it (our tongues) we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God…My brothers, these things ought not be so.”
