Hindrances

There was a man who had the incredible opportunity of being a disciple of Jesus. He saw Jesus, what He was doing, and what He had. He came to Jesus to ask how to have eternal life and Jesus asked him to follow Him! What an awesome opportunity. We read about this in Luke 18 but we don’t read about this man following Jesus. Why?

The man had something hindering him from following Jesus. He was rich, really really rich. Jesus asked him to sell all he had, give it to the poor, and follow Him. This rich man could not do that. His wealth was in the way.

Far too often we have things get in the way of following Jesus. Jesus invites us into a relationship with Him and following Him in faith daily. But we don’t. We let the very things He gave us hinder our relationship with him. For me, when we moved to China leaving off-roading was very hard. It was something I let get so big and take over my life. My time, energy, money, and dedication was spent towards building up my truck, fixing my truck, and out on the trails. This isn’t a bad thing, but it became the ultimate thing. It hindered me from following Jesus. Giving it up and moving across the world was the best thing I could have ever done. It forced me to place Jesus as the ultimate thing again.
