New Shores Damon

Why Damon?

Damon needs a gospel presence in the community.  We are called to follow the Acts 1:8 Strategic model of making disciples.  It is broken down below.

Acts 1:8

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Our areas of influence…

Jerusalem – Sweeny/West Columbia

Judea – ???

Samaria –  Street Reach Memphis, Resonate Church in Pacific Northwest

Ends of the earth – Asia, Central America, Indonesia

We believe Damon and the surrounding communities are our Judea and this is a part of our missions strategy we are missing.

Why this model?

There have been several models tried in Damon over the years.  The Autonomous church model was first. First Baptist Church Damon closed it’s doors in 2012.

In 2013, a group of 5 churches West of the Brazos, in cooperation with Gulf Coast Baptist Association, came together to try to put a gospel presence back in Damon.  New Shores was one of those 5 churches. We expended time, money and energy to get a church restarted in Damon.

Today, 5 years later, this church is still alive, but barely functioning as a church.  There are 12-15 committed members. Most of them are elderly and don’t have the energy to really do ministry that is needed.

This model is a model that is working to help revive dying churches all throughout our country.  According to Thom Rainer, President of Lifeway Resources and one of the leading voices in church revitalization, multi-site churches are the wave of the future in revitalizing dying churches.

How exactly will the model work?

Damon Community Church will become New Shores – Damon.  The Association will give all assets of the church to New Shores. Currently, this includes a building and some liquid assets.  We will take full control of the church and make it a satellite campus.

We will hire a campus pastor part time to oversee the needs of this campus.  The campus pastor will have a job description with expectations.

One of these expectations is to preach once a month. The other Sundays the campus pastor will be there to oversee the service and operations of the church.  BJ will preach at Damon campus 3 times a month. The service will start earlier so he can preach and get back to Sweeny to preach. This will not interfere with his preaching responsibilities at New Shores main campus.  Preston will preach on the 5th Sundays and when BJ is out on church business or vacation.

All funds that are received or spent will come to the main campus and be dispersed.  There will be no us vs. them. They will become us and we will become them.

As people are reached, we will begin to add new ministry programming at the Damon campus.
